Review

Have you ever seen a Jeep in town with a window decal or bumper sticker that reads, "If you can read this, Roll me over"? I think I am not the only one whom has wondered what that would really be like. Being that my Jeep is also my daily driver, rolling the thing would be the last thing on my "to-do" list. There is a time though, when your tread leaves the pavement and you take to the terrain.

It seems like each and everyone of us enjoys pushing our Jeeps to the limits, but sometimes the limits push us and we find ourselves in a position that we really didn't mean to end up in.

This is where Steel Horse Automotive comes in with their "Clinometer". Though considered "non-useful" to the hardcore of the hardcore Jeepers, there are many of us whom find plenty of usefullness in it. The Clinometer has basic architecture meaning: almost anyone can read it, even if you have never been "hooked on phonics".

Case in point: The left gauge displays the side-to-side angle (roll), while the right gauge displays the front-to-back angle (pitch). Sounds easy? Well it is, if your angles reach the number 3 on the 1-3 scale, you can almost count on being screwed if you keep it up. To top things off, the Clinometer is illuminated so you can simply wire it directly to your lights. Installation is simple with self-adhesive backing attached to its mounting bracket. This bracket also has two pre-drilled holes so you can mount it almost anywhere if you choose to do so.

The only negative aspect of the Clinometer is that sometimes it is too sensitive. When you accelerate in everyday traffic, the guages have a tendency to go ahead and adjust to your degree of torque. Not really a bad thing, but rather annoying more than anything.

The Clinometer retails for $22.95.- and at that price, it is difficult to pass one of these little gems up. Who knows, it just might keep ya from serious body work one day.
